The relationship between a falconer and a raptor is very different from the relationship between a person and a pet.  A falconry bird is never a pet.  Unlike a dog, a trained raptor does not perform because it wishes to please.  It is trained to associate the falconer with food through variable response techniques.  Great patience and skill in handling the raptor is required by every falconer.  It is necessary for the falconer to have the time and patience to pursue the art and sport of falconry.

Apprentice workshops are for those interested in becoming a falconer.  Current apprentices or those interested in becoming an apprentice are invited.  This is an excellent place to acquire a sponsor.  Workshops are presented by master falconers every other year at our Eyas picnic.  The most valuable part of the workshop is meeting other apprentices and falconers.  Our sport has a rich tradition of hands-on teaching and information sharing.  Demonstrations such as leash braiding, lure making and bird handling are some of the workshops offered.
